Radio Static by Jack Pacilio

I’d burn down the corner store
If it wasn’t already gone
Used to come from miles away
And spend the evening chasing dawn

But if I could reclaim
I’d give it back without a glance
Never is the thought that counts
When all you ever do is ask

Don’t turn off the radio
It isn’t all that late
I could say it like it is
But I couldn’t demonstrate

But if I could reclaim
I’d give it back without a glance
Never is the thought that counts
When all you ever do is ask

“Radio Static” evolved out of an assignment for Music 201 that asked us to write a new song based on the melodic contour of another song. I chose “In My Life” by The Beatles, a song whose melody and chord structure spell out the emotional ambiguity of memory. I wrote “Radio Static” with the same sensibility in mind. The lyrics offer a series of disconnected vignettes; the chorus expresses the subject’s desire to “reclaim” them, accentuating the uneasy and incomplete nature of nostalgia.
